Aditya Dhar’s latest thriller, Dhurandhar, has captured attention not just for its high-octane action and star-studded cast, but for the real-life events it draws upon.
The film tells a semi-fictionalised account of India’s efforts against terror networks in Pakistan, particularly the notorious gangs of Karachi’s Lyari.
Central to the story is the late Karachi SP Chaudhary Aslam Khan, portrayed by Sanjay Dutt—a role that has sparked both praise and concern among those who knew him best.
Noreen, Chaudhary Aslam’s widow, recently shared her thoughts on the portrayal in a candid interview on the Dialogue Pakistan podcast.
She revealed that her husband had been a long-time fan of Sanjay Dutt, ever since watching Khalnayak in the 1990s, and she trusted that the actor would capture his essence. Yet, she had one major concern: a line in the trailer referring to her husband as “the offspring of the devil and a djinn.”
“We are Muslims, and such words are disrespectful not only to Aslam but his mother, who was a simple, honest woman,” Noreen said. “If I see my husband being portrayed wrongly or any propaganda against him in the film, I will definitely take all the legal steps I can. It is strange that Indian filmmakers find no other subjects but to malign Pakistan.”
Chaudhary Aslam’s life and legacy speak for themselves. Born in 1963, he joined the Sind Police in the 1980s as an ASI and later led the Lyari Task Force, tackling gang violence head-on. He was known for his courage and determination, surviving a Taliban attack in 2011, only to be tragically assassinated in 2014 by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
In Dhurandhar, Sanjay Dutt’s performance pays tribute to this fearless officer, while Ranveer Singh plays an Indian spy working to dismantle terror networks in Karachi.
The film also features Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, and R. Madhavan, blending intense action with the intricacies of intelligence operations. Despite mixed critical reviews, Dhurandhar has resonated with audiences, earning Rs 99 crore net in India during its opening weekend.
