Actor Alia Bhatt is reportedly in advanced talks to play Sumathi in the sequel of Kalki 2898 AD. Yep, that’s the same role Deepika Padukone was originally cast for—but she’s no longer part of the project.
The makers had confirmed Deepika’s exit earlier, citing creative and commitment differences. And Deepika didn’t exactly stay quiet about the controversy swirling around her alleged request for an 8-hour workday.
In an interview with CNBC TV18, she said:
“By virtue of being a woman, if that comes across as pushy or whatever, then so be it. But it is no secret that a lot of superstars, male superstars, in the Indian Film Industry, have been working for 8 hours for years, and it's never made headlines!” She went on,
“A lot of them only work for 8 hours Monday to Friday. They do not work on weekends.”
So, clearly, she had a point there.
The makers had released their own statement at the time:
"After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership, and a film like Kalki 2898 AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works."
Why Alia Bhatt?
Insiders say Alia Bhatt is the frontrunner to replace Deepika. If it happens, this will be her first collaboration with both Prabhas and director Nag Ashwin.
Fans are already buzzing—Alia’s style and screen presence could bring a new vibe to the sci-fi epic.
What’s Next for Alia Bhatt
Alia is keeping busy. She’s also starring in Alpha with Sharvari Wagh, and teaming up with Ranbir Kapoor again in Love & War, which also has Vicky Kaushal. So even if the Kalki deal isn’t official yet, she’s clearly not slowing down.
