Shefali Shah has built her name as one of Bollywood’s most powerful performers, known for her fierce screen presence and honesty. But her journey to that point wasn’t easy. On a recent episode of Twinkle Khanna’s podcast, The Icons, the actress opened up about a vulnerable chapter in her life, one that unexpectedly involved Twinkle’s son, Aarav Bhatia.
Twinkle began by sharing a personal memory of Shefali.
“Shefali is also an old friend,” she said, “and at one point, we were sitting in my garden, and she was upset that she wasn’t getting the kind of work she should be getting. She was crying.” It was a simple, quiet moment between two friends, until a strange sound interrupted them. “We heard a rustle in the bushes,” Twinkle continued, “and it turned out to be my son, who was holding a videotape, recording this whole thing. So some people have a sex tape floating around… she has a sobbing tape.”
Shefali, laughing at the memory, joked, “Maybe we should put it out now, I will get popular.”
The conversation then shifted to her professional choices. Shefali revealed that after Dil Dhadakne Do, she consciously started turning down mother roles, even when they came from major films. “After Dil Dhadakne Do, I made a strategic decision that I don’t want to play mother to people who are just a couple of years younger than me,” she said. “I was offered Neerja and Kapoor and Sons, and I loved the scripts of both, but I felt that if I do this, this is going to be the end for me.”

That decision, though risky, eventually worked in her favor. “There has probably been more waiting than acting in my career,” she admitted. “And while I was waiting, Mukesh Chhabra called me with a part. Within the first five minutes of meeting Richie Mehta, I said yes to Delhi Crime.”
Delhi Crime went on to become a landmark moment in Indian streaming history, a global success that earned the first-ever International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series in 2020. Shefali’s portrayal of DCP Vartika Chaturvedi brought her widespread acclaim and marked the true turning point in her career.
