Bhumi Pednekar, known for choosing strong and layered roles, is all set to grace the screen once again in Netflix’s upcoming romantic drama The Royals. In a candid chat about her decision to come on board and her experience with the cast, Bhumi opened up about what truly drew her in.

“You know honestly, it was the script that pushed me to, that made me just jump on this idea,” Bhumi shared. “Like everybody on this table, I love love.”

Bhumi has always had a soft corner for romance as a genre, especially romantic comedies. “The genre of rom-coms, romance, is hands down my most favourite,” she said. “Every time I go on to Netflix, I’m like, aaj kuch naya rom-com aaya hai, hum kya explore baat sakte hain.”

Recalling the moment she first heard about The Royals, she said, “I remember it was 20, 23 November when Romita and I got in touch. Tanya called me, she’s like, you know there’s this thing, you’re gonna, I think you’re gonna love it. Just read it. Mujhe ne bhi tha, main hospital mein thi.”

Even in the middle of being unwell, Bhumi found herself hooked to the story. “She just told me, it’s a romance. Mainne bukhaar mein Royals padhna suru kiya. I was like, it’s a romance? That’s so rare, that doesn’t happen. And I just couldn’t stop.”

What followed was an instant connection with the story. “I remember telling my team, Ben, that can I get another episode? Ek aur episode, ek aur episode. Kar kar ki maine pune series padh le thi. And I have to say that it’s by far been one of my most wholesome experiences.”

Her journey with the cast and crew has also been extremely memorable. “The time we, all of us, spend together is something that till date we cherish. I’ve made some really, really, really close friends on this set. It is just a safety net that we fall back on.”

Speaking about her character Sophia, Bhumi said, “I’m just very lucky that I got to play Sophia because there are so many shades in her. She’s powerful, she’s stubborn, but that’s the most beautiful thing about her. She’s just strong, and she’s nurturing, and she’s loving.”

The role also left a lasting impression on her. “I feel like there’s a lot of those little, little nuances and aspects that I’ve picked up from all these wonderful women that I shared spaces with while shooting. So thank you so much. Thank you so much, all of you.”
