Veteran Bengali singer-songwriter Pratul Mukhopadhyay passed away on Saturday at the age of 83. He had been undergoing treatment for age-related ailments at Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital, where he breathed his last in the morning.
He was best known for timeless compositions like Ami Banglay Gaan Gai and Dinga Bhasao Sagore.
Mukhopadhyay had been battling health issues for a long time, and despite medical intervention, his condition worsened in recent weeks. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had visited him at the hospital, and a dedicated medical board was formed to oversee his treatment. However, he remained bedridden until his passing.
Born in 1942 in Barisal, now in Bangladesh, Mukhopadhyay later moved to West Bengal, where he became a defining figure in Bengali music and songwriting. Deeply influenced by literature and folk traditions, his songs struck a chord with generations of listeners. Ami Banglay Gaan Gai remains a beloved anthem of Bengali pride, while Dinga Bhasao Sagore continues to hold a special place among music lovers.
His passion for music was sparked early in life, inspired by his father, a government school teacher. Over the years, Mukhopadhyay carved a unique space in the Bengali music industry with his poetic lyricism and soul-stirring compositions. Apart from being a singer and lyricist, he also contributed to Bengali cinema as a playback singer, most notably lending his voice to Gosainbaganer Bhoot.
Despite his widespread recognition, Mukhopadhyay led a reclusive life, choosing to stay away from the limelight. His legacy, however, remains immortal through his music, which continues to inspire and resonate with audiences across generations.
