Bengali director Arun Roy passes away at 56

Bengali director Arun Roy, who was known for his films Bagha Jatin (2023) and Hiralal (2021), died at the age of 56.

Bengali  director Arun Roy, who was known for his films Bagha Jatin (2023) and Hiralal (2021), died at the age of 56. The ace director passed away due to a severe lung infection early Thursday morning after battling cancer for over a year, said Dr. Kinjal Nanda of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Arun Roy was undergoing treatment at the hospital. Roy was admitted to the ICU due to his worsening health condition.

He was supported by a BiPAP system. However, his condition deteriorated further in the past few days, necessitating invasive ventilation.

Actor Dev, who had played the lead role in Bagha Jatin, visited the director at the hospital recently.

His Dev Entertainment Ventures posted on X about the passing away of Arun Roy and mourned the loss. "We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our beloved director Arun Roy. A visionary filmmaker, his passion, creativity & dedication to storytelling will forever inspire us. His loss leaves an irreplaceable void in our hearts & in the world of cinema.

Rest in peace, Arun Da."

Arun Roy’s mortal remains will be taken to his residence in the afternoon and post that it will be kept at Technicians’ Studio for his fans and colleagues to pay respect.

Arun Roy, whose real name was Arunava Raychaudhuri, shot to fame with his debut film Hiralal.

Hiralal was appreciated for its narrative and performances and it featured Dr. Kinjal Nanda in the lead role.

Post this, Roy's next film 8/12 Binoy Badal Dinesh (2022), was also a hit.

However, it was Bagha Jatin, which was about the life of revolutionary Jatindranath Mukherjee, portrayed by Dev that catapulted him to fame.

Roy was diagnosed with esophageal cancer during the shoot of Bagha Jatin. Despite the diagnosis, the director remained steadfast in his commitment to his work. He recently completed the filming of Aranyer Din Ratri while undergoing treatment.
