Shoojit Sircar directorial Piku hit the theatres again this May 9, to mark its 10th anniversary this year. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Irrfan Khan and Deepika Padukone, the film received critical acclaim and also received several awards. Recently, Irrfan's son and actor Babil Khan spoke about the film and this is how he described the film.
In an interview with News18, Babil called Piku a 'masterpiece'. Recalling one of Irrfan's dialogues from the film, he said, "In the film, there’s a dialogue that baba says to Deepika’s character. He asks her, who’re you without your roots and if you lose your roots, then who’re you? As I go along with my life, that line becomes truer for me. That’s why I say that Shoojit da takes me back to my roots."
For those unaware, Babil also worked as an intern in the camera department during the filming of Piku, an experience that deeply influenced him, especially due to Shoojit Sircar’s distinctive storytelling style. Reflecting on their bond, Babil shared that he sees Shoojit da as a father figure in his life. " He has been a very, very important part of my sanity and in a very practical way. He comes to visit me and tells me, ‘Clean your room first and then we’ll talk.’ So, I clean my room quickly because I really want to talk to him. After that, he tells me that since I’ve enough space to play football, I should start dribbling the ball," he added.
In an earlier interview with News18, director Shoojit Sircar who shared a close bond with Irrfan, recalled their friendship and said, "I connected quite deeply with him. Sometimes, you become friends with someone because there’s a purpose there. But with Irrfan, there was no purpose or any condition. We used to just meet and speak. We used to frequently call each other up and chat."
With a special re-release this Friday, Piku, which debuted in theatres on May 8, 2015, made a comeback. The movie centres on Piku, an architect, and her ageing and eccentric father, Bhaskor Banerjee, as they travel by car to Kolkata. As time passes, their frequent arguments about trivial issues eventually give way to a greater comprehension and emotional bond.
