Renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has issued a public apology following a controversy sparked by his comments on the Brahmin community during a social media exchange. The apology came after an FIR was registered against him at the Bajaj Nagar police station in Jaipur on Saturday night.
In light of the growing outrage, Anurag Kashyap took to Instagram to offer a heartfelt apology. In his post, he admitted to losing his composure in anger and using inappropriate language that hurt the sentiments of an entire community he has long respected. Below is a translation of his Instagram post written in Hindi:
According to Sub-Inspector Ram Kripal, the case was filed based on a complaint by local resident Anil Chaturvedi from Barkat Nagar. The complaint alleged that Kashyap made derogatory remarks against Brahmins while responding to a user on social media. The situation escalated after his comments went viral, drawing widespread criticism and backlash from several sections of society.
Kashyap’s controversial comment was reportedly made while defending his upcoming film Phule, a biographical drama on social reformers Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule. The film has already faced scrutiny over its depiction of caste dynamics, and Kashyap’s online defense only intensified the backlash.
The apology post comes amid rising tensions and calls for accountability. While Kashyap has maintained that his intention was never to hurt or generalize any community, the incident has reignited conversations around social responsibility, especially for public figures with large followings.
Kashyap’s film Phule remains under scrutiny, and it is yet to be seen whether the controversy will impact its release or public reception. Meanwhile, legal proceedings in Jaipur will determine the next course of action regarding the FIR filed against the director.
