The Embassy of India in Tashkent recently organised a remarkable Film Festival to celebrate International Women’s Day, showcasing a collection of acclaimed women-centric films that highlight the remarkable achievements of female characters in shaping societal views.
The festival presented a unique opportunity to honour films that depict the power and resilience of women, with Saiyami Kher’s performance in Ghoomer selected for a special premiere, marking a significant moment for the actress.
Ghoomer, a film directed by R. Balki, remains highly relevant even a year and a half after its release. Saiyami Kher, who played the lead role of a differently-abled sportsperson defying all odds to pursue her dreams, attended the festival in Tashkent to celebrate the film’s screening.
Expressing her excitement, she said, “‘Ghoomer’ is not just a film for me; it’s an emotion. The journey of playing a differently-abled sportsperson who defies all odds to pursue her dreams was a transformative experience, and I am thrilled that the film was screened at such a meaningful festival and the experience was truly incredible being there in person. Uzbekistan has a deep love for Indian cinema, and this unique collaboration between the two countries over our shared passion for films is truly special.”
As an actor, Saiyami shared her pride in being part of a festival that celebrates the strength and perseverance of female characters.
She added, "As an actor, witnessing ‘Ghoomer’ being part of a festival that celebrates strong female characters makes me incredibly proud. I was elated to be there for the entire week, immersing myself in the festival, interacting with audiences, and celebrating cinema that empowers and inspires."
The selection of Ghoomer at the Uzbekistan Film Festival is a testament to the film’s global impact and its ongoing relevance in conversations about women’s empowerment.
The festival, which brings together film lovers and industry professionals, plays a pivotal role in strengthening cultural ties between India and Uzbekistan. Through this collaboration, both nations are reminded of the power of storytelling to shape and challenge societal norms and inspire change.
