Bollywood fans continue to love the classic song Chunari Chunari by Salman Khan and Sushmita Sen from the 1999 hit film Biwi No.1, which is renowned for its memorable lyrics and catchy melody. Remake rumours were recently sparked by a video of Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde, and Mrunal Thakur filming the song for the upcoming movie Hai Jawaani Toh Ishq Hona Hai.
Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, who originally sang the song with Anuradha Sriram, has expressed his opinions on the subject, though this has not been verified. Generations of people have loved Chunari Chunari, a party anthem written by Sameer and composed by Anu Malik.
After more than twenty years, the song is set to make a comeback in the upcoming romantic comedy Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, which stars Mrunal Thakur, Varun Dhawan, and Pooja Hegde. Social media has been buzzing with excitement and controversy as a result of behind-the-scenes videos of the three of them filming the recreated version in London.
Abhijeet Bhattacharya, the original playback singer, has unexpectedly come forward to voice his disapproval of the remake. The seasoned singer disclosed in an open interview with Hindustan Times that he had not been consulted regarding the recreation.
“Mujhe music composer, film ke director kisi ne nahi bataya ki iss song ko remake kiya jaa raha hai. Himmat bhi nahi kar sakte batane ki,” Abhijeet said. [Neither the music composer nor the film's director informed me that this song was being remade. They wouldn't even dare to tell me.]
Interestingly, despite the track’s popularity, Abhijeet confessed that Chunari Chunari has never been one of his personal favourites. “For me personally, Chunari Chunari was not a great song, never. It was one of those ‘jaldi gaao aur bhaago studio se' song. I never count it among my great songs,” he said.
Reflecting on its enduring legacy, the singer added, “For the past 25 years I have heard it being played at functions, parties, and would always think ‘What is it about the song, there was nothing that I remember from the time I sang it.’ But I do realise it has become iconic for fans.”

When asked if the remake upset him, given the emotional resonance it holds for audiences, Abhijeet replied, “Mujhe farak nahi padhta itni chhoti cheez se... Tuchhi cheez mein main padhta hi nahi hoon.” [I do not care about such a small thing... I do not get involved in petty things.]
Directed by David Dhawan, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is slated to hit cinemas on 10 April 2026.
