Gurdaspur, with its nine assembly seats, has been a pivotal battleground for various political parties. Its proximity to the India-Pakistan border highlights its strategic significance from a security standpoint. Over the years, the constituency has witnessed remarkable electoral battles, with both the Congress and the BJP asserting their dominance at different times.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Sunny Deol clinched victory with 558,719 votes, triumphing over Congress's Sunil Kumar Jakhar, who secured 476,260 votes. The Aam Aadmi Party's candidate, Peter Masih, secured the third position with 27,744 votes. Prior to Sunny Deol's win, Gurdaspur had been a stronghold for the Congress, with Sunil Jakhar's record-breaking victory margin of 193,219 votes in the 2017 by-elections following the demise of MP Vinod Khanna. Khanna, a renowned actor, had won Gurdaspur's seat four times consecutively from 1998 to 2014. However, his passing in 2017 necessitated the by-elections, resulting in Sunil Jakhar's landslide triumph.
