The Biju Janata Dal, or the BJD was formed in December 1997 by Naveen Patnaik, the son of prominent Odisha politician Bijayananda (Biju) Patnaik.

The party was allied with the Indian National Congress for a long period of time, and also worked in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party. While the BJD may not command clout on the national stage, it has been a stable force in Odisha.

The 2019 Lok Sabha elections saw a reduction in the BJDs seat count, winning only 12 seats out of the 21, losing the balance seats to the BJP.

The BJD promises to the state what has been its electoral promise in the previous years- stability and good administration. For the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the BJD has retained its policy of allocating 33% seats to women candidates and has fielded women in 7 of the 21 Lok Sabha seats.

As per the BJD sources, the candidates who have been fielded for the Odisha Assembly Elections are Prabhu J from Laxmipur, Gitanjali Routray from Paradip, Prasanna Acharya from Sambalpur, Rohit Pujari from Rairakhol, Madhab Sardar from Telkoi, Braja Pradhan from Talcher, Manorama Mohanty from Narla, Chakramani Kanhar from Baliguda, Ananta N Jena from BBSR-Central.
