Lok Sabha Election 2024 Kanhaiya Kumar assaulted in Northeast Delhi

Congress candidate from Northeast Delhi Kanhaiya Kumar was allegedly assaulted and attacked with ink on Friday by some people in the constituency.

The incident happened outside the AAP office in the New Usmanpur area as Kahnhaiya was coming out after a party meeting with local Councillor Chhaya Sharma.

According to a complaint by Sharma, "Some persons came and put garland around Sh. Kanhaiya Kumar. After garlanding him, some persons threw ink on Sh. Kanhaiya Kumar and tried to assault him. When Smt. Chhaya Sharma tried to intervene, they misbehaved and threatened her." Kanhaiya in a statement said the attack was ordered by rival contender from the constituency Manoj Tiwari.

Maharashtra BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address an election rally at Mumbai's Shivaji Park on May 17. Bawankule confirmed the news after meeting with MNS chief Raj Thackeray, who has extended his party's support to the BJP-led NDA's candidates in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls.

"PM Modi will address a poll rally at Shivaji Park on Friday (May 17). I invited Raj Thackeray for the rally and he has agreed to attend it," stated the BJP leader.

Bawankule expressed optimism about Thackeray's support reflecting positively in the poll outcomes. He also mentioned that Thackeray has been asked to join the BJP for the poll campaign in the upcoming days.

On Wednesday, PM Modi addressed two election rallies in Maharashtra, supporting NDA nominees in Nashik and Thane districts, and held a roadshow in Mumbai.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal appealed to voters during a roadshow in Amritsar, Punjab, urging them to support AAP to prevent his return to jail. He warned of BJP's potential to end reservation for SC, ST, and OBC if they secure a majority in Lok Sabha.

"Whether I go (back) to jail or not depends upon you. If you press the ‘jhadoo’ (AAP’s election symbol) button, I will not need to go to jail," Kejriwal stated during the event.

He emphasized voters to consider their choice carefully, whether it's to secure his freedom or to facilitate his imprisonment.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah embarked on a two-day visit to Srinagar starting from May 16, with plans to chair a significant security review meeting during his stay.

Upon arrival at a Srinagar hotel, Shah's agenda includes meetings with local BJP leaders, strategically planned ahead of the remaining two phases of elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

Although Shah's visit to Kashmir is notable, a local BJP leader clarified that it's not politically motivated. Instead, it seems to be focused on key security matters, underlining the serious nature of the discussions to be held during his stay.

According to a report by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), approximately 39% of candidates contesting in the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections are crorepatis, with an average asset value of ₹6.21 crore. Out of the 866 candidates contesting in this phase, 338 have declared assets worth more than ₹1 crore.

Among the candidates in the sixth phase, BJP's Naveen Jindal from Kurukshetra tops the list with declared assets amounting to ₹1,241 crore, followed by Santrupt Misra with ₹482 crore and Sushil Gupta with ₹169 crore.

The analysis also revealed that candidates from various major political parties have significant assets. For instance, all six candidates from BJD, four out of four candidates each from RJD and JD(U), 48 out of 51 candidates from BJP, and 11 out of 12 candidates from SP have declared assets worth more than ₹1 crore. Similarly, 20 out of 25 candidates from Congress, 4 out of 5 candidates from AAP, and 7 out of 9 candidates from AITC have assets surpassing ₹1 crore.

Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, DK Shivakumar, expressed confidence in the INDIA alliance, predicting a triumph of nearly 300 seats, while estimating around 200 seats for the NDA. Emphasizing a belief in collective leadership, he outlined the alliance's intention to clinch victory in the elections and subsequently convene to deliberate and establish leadership for the government.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a prominent figure in the Congress party, asserted that her party adheres to the principles of Mahatma Gandhi, who famously uttered "Hey Ram" before his passing. Addressing a poll rally, she rebutted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's accusations of the Congress being anti-religion, stating, "They accuse us of being against the Hindu religion. We follow Mahatma Gandhi's ideal who had chanted 'Hey Ram' before dying." This statement emphasizes the Congress party's alignment with the values espoused by Gandhi rather than being anti-religion, as alleged by Modi.

The Election Commission has conveyed its displeasure regarding the post-poll violence in Andhra Pradesh. It directed the chief secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure that such incidents of violence do not occur again. Additionally, all Superintendents of Police (SPs) have been tasked with taking pre-emptive measures to prevent such situations from arising in the future.

Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai highlighted the strides made in controlling Naxalism in the state, attributing the success to the NDA's double engine government. He stated, "It is because of (NDA’s) double engine government that in just 3-4 months, 112 Naxalites were killed, 400 Naxalites surrendered and 153 have been arrested. This is a big success for our forces. Soon, Naxalism will be removed from Chhattisgarh." Sai's remarks underscore the collaborative efforts between the central and state governments in addressing the Naxalism menace in Chhattisgarh.
