The ruling BJP has not fully accepted the Constitution of India and its leaders are seeking a majority to change it, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said on March 11.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi always says the Constitution is supreme and it won’t be changed ever. On the other hand, his party leaders are seeking two-thirds majority to make amendments,” Kharge said.

The Congress chief remarks came after a BJP MP from Karnataka sparked controversy by saying his party needed to win 400 Lok Sabha seats to “amend” the Constitution and rectify the damage done by the Congress over the years.
The BJP distanced itself from Anantkumar Hegde’s comments, saying they they reflected his personal views and not those of party. It had taken note of the statement and sought a clarification from Hegde, the party said.
Kharge alleged that the BJP and its parent organisation, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), were against social justice, secularism, and reservation mentioned in the Constitution.
“This is one of the reasons Prime Minister Modi has been asking for more than 400 seats in the Lok Sabha elections because it wants to change the Constitution,” Kharge said.

Modi had chosen silence and not acted against such leaders.
“PM Modi always talks about BR Ambedkar but doesn’t follow his principles. He has failed to speak about his party leaders who keep talking about bringing amendments to the Constitution,” Kharge said.
The BJP wants to take away the freedom of speech and freedom of expression from the people of India, which has been guaranteed by the Constitution, he added.
