UGC Denies Exam Cancellation Notice Amid Operation Sindoor Strike

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on May 7 issued a strong clarification regarding a fake public notice falsely claiming that all university examinations have been cancelled due to a “war-like situation” in the country. The notice, which has been circulating widely on social media, advised students to return home — a claim the UGC has labelled as completely fabricated and misleading.

In a post shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the UGC stated, “A fabricated public notice is being circulated under the name of UGC, claiming that all exams are cancelled due to a war situation and advising students to return home. UGC confirms this notice is fake. There are no such directions from UGC.”

The Commission further urged students, parents, and academic institutions to rely only on official updates published on the UGC website and verified social media channels.

“Spreading such misinformation is a punishable offence. Don’t fall for fake information. Stay alert. Follow only official UGC sources,” the UGC added.

This clarification comes in the wake of Operation Sindoor, India’s strategic missile strike on May 7 targeting nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The operation was launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, and aimed at eliminating high-value targets from terror outfits Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

Shortly after the strikes, Pakistan violated the 2021 Ceasefire Agreement by shelling the Bhimber Gali sector in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch-Rajouri region. The Indian Army responded in a calibrated and appropriate manner, according to the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI), who also posted about the situation on X.

In light of rising misinformation, the UGC’s proactive response highlights the importance of media literacy and information verification, especially during national emergencies.
