GATE 2025 Begins on February 1: Check Important Guidelines, Exam Pattern and More

GATE 2025 will be held on February 1, 2, 15, and 16 in a computer-based mode across India. Check exam dates, pattern, admit card details, marking scheme, and exam-day guidelines.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2025 will begin on February 1, 2025, and will continue on February 2, 15, and 16, 2025. IIT Roorkee is conducting the exam, which will take place in two shifts each day, morning (9:30 am to 12:30 pm) and afternoon (2:30 pm to 5:30 pm). The exam will be held in a computer-based mode at various centres across India.

Candidates appearing for GATE 2025 must download their admit card from the GOAPS portal. To access the hall ticket, they need to enter their GATE enrollment ID and password. It is mandatory to carry a printed copy of the admit card along with a valid ID proof such as an Aadhar card, PAN card, Passport, Driving License, or Voter ID.

GATE 2025 Exam Pattern

The exam will be conducted for 30 subjects, and candidates should be aware of the exam structure, time duration, marking scheme, and question types.

  1. Mode & Language: Online (Computer-Based) in English
  2. Duration: 3 hours
  3. Sections: General Aptitude + Candidate’s Selected Subject
  4. Types of Questions:

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
  • Multiple Select Questions (MSQ)
  • Numerical Answer Type (NAT)

Marking Scheme

For most papers (except AR, CY, DA, EY, GG, MA, PH, ST, XH, XL):

  • General Aptitude: 15 marks
  • Engineering Mathematics: 13 marks
  • Subject-specific questions: 72 marks
  • Total: 100 marks

For papers AR, CY, DA, EY, GG, MA, PH, ST, XH, and XL:
  • General Aptitude: 15 marks
  • Subject-specific questions: 85 marks
  • Total: 100 marks

Negative Marking
  • For MCQs worth 1 mark: 1/3rd mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.
  • For MCQs worth 2 marks: 2/3rd mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.
  • No negative marking for MSQ and NAT questions.

Important Exam Day Guidelines
  • Arrive at least 90 minutes before the exam starts.
  • Calculators, pagers, mobile phones, watches, and other electronic gadgets are not allowed. A virtual calculator will be provided on the system.
  • Candidates can log in and read the exam instructions 20 minutes before the exam begins.
  • A scribble pad will be provided for calculations. Candidates can bring a pen, pencil, and a transparent water bottle.
  • Those with extra time accommodations can leave the exam centre after 12:30 pm (morning session) and after 5:30 pm (afternoon session).
