The Supreme Court, on January 7, 2025, declined to entertain a plea alleging widespread malpractices during the 70th Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) Preliminary Exam (PT). The petition, which sought the exam's cancellation, was dismissed with the SC advising the petitioner to approach the Patna High Court for redressal.
Student protests in Bihar’s capital continue as candidates demand the cancellation of the 70th BPSC PT exam, citing allegations of irregularities. The petition had also requested a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the exam under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge.
The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) has firmly stated that the exam will not be canceled. Apart from the Bapu Centre in Patna, where issues were reported, no other centers will hold a re-exam. BPSC clarified that it has not received any official requests regarding exam cancellation or re-conduction through district officials.
The protests have sparked political tensions in Bihar, with Jan Suraaj leader Prashant Kishor staging a hunger strike in solidarity with the students. On Monday morning, Patna police removed him from the protest site and arrested him. However, he was granted unconditional bail by the Patna court the same evening.
With the Supreme Court's direction to approach the Patna High Court, the focus now shifts to the state judiciary for further developments on the demands of the protesting students. Meanwhile, the protests and political debates surrounding the examination continue to dominate the state’s headlines.
