9 Indian Universities, Including IIT Delhi, Among World's Top 50 in QS Subject-Wise Rankings

Nine Indian universities feature in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, with IIT Delhi, ISM Dhanbad, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras securing top 50 spots in various categories.

Nine Indian universities and institutes have made it to the world’s top 50 in the subject-wise list of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025. The latest edition of the rankings, published by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, includes a total of twelve entries from these nine institutions.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has been ranked 26th in the engineering category, making it the highest-ranked Indian institution in this field. IIT Delhi has also been named the best engineering college in the country in the subject-wise rankings.

The Indian School of Mines (ISM) University, Dhanbad, has secured the 20th position in mineral and mining engineering. ISM Dhanbad has received an overall score of 74.7 in the engineering category.

IIT Bombay is ranked 28th in engineering, with a score of 82.3. The institute has also been placed at the 192nd position in the arts subject category. IIT Madras, which holds the top spot in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in India, has secured the 53rd position in the engineering category in the QS subject-wise list.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 have been compiled by comparing over 21,000 academic offerings taken by students at more than 1,700 universities across 100 countries and territories. The rankings cover 55 subjects across five broad faculty areas.

According to the official statement from QS, this year’s analysis highlights new developments in areas connected to future industries. It includes 34 new entries in the top 100 for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI), 45 changes within the top 50 for Computer Science, and China’s first-ever entry into the top 10 in the Engineering and Technology faculty area.

The statement also mentioned that eight new countries and territories have made it to the rankings, with 171 institutions appearing for the first time. Additionally, 14 universities have risen into the top 10 positions in their respective subject areas.
