The victim, who is from Maharashtra, sustained injuries in the incident and is currently receiving treatment at the Thiruvallur Government Hospital.

Four teenagers were arrested by Tamil Nadu Police for allegedly assaulting a migrant worker near Chennai. The incident came to light after a video circulated widely on social media showing four youths harassing and assaulting a migrant worker at a secluded spot, NDTV reported.

According to the police, one of the accused later uploaded the video as an Instagram reel, in which he was seen displaying a machete while a Tamil song played in the background. Another clip, as per the report, showed the group attacking the victim, with one of them posing beside him after the assault.

The victim, who is from Maharashtra, sustained injuries in the incident and is currently receiving treatment at the Thiruvallur Government Hospital.

According to available details, the victim was first targeted while travelling on a moving train. The accused allegedly threatened him with machetes during the journey. What began as intimidation soon escalated into a violent assault.

All four accused, aged 17, were taken into custody. Three were sent to a juvenile home in Chengalpattu, while the fourth was released on bail after the court took his academic commitments into consideration.

Reacting to the incident, Sivaganga Member of Parliament Karti Chidambaram urged the Tamil Nadu Police to take stronger measures to reassure the public. In a post on X, he called for a statewide “show of force,” including extensive vehicle checks, identity verification, and regular reporting by history-sheeters at local police stations. Chidambaram’s Congress party is part of the ruling DMK-led alliance in the state.

Opposition parties have criticised the MK Stalin-led government, particularly with assembly elections due next year, accusing it of failing to curb drug abuse in Tamil Nadu.

AIADMK leader Kovai Sathyan said the incident reflected the consequences of narcotics reaching young people. He alleged that the state was becoming a hub for drug-related issues and argued that those involved should be tried as adults rather than juveniles.

Responding to the criticism, DMK leader TKS Elangovan described the incident as an isolated case. He said the police acted promptly once the matter came to light and maintained that migrant workers across Tamil Nadu continue to feel safe in the state.
