A 22-year-old BTech student, Udit Gaayke, died after he was allegedly beaten by police personnel in Bhopal early Friday, officials said. A video circulating online shows one policeman restraining Gaayke while another strikes him repeatedly with a stick.

According to DCP (Zone 2) Vivek Singh, constables Santosh Bamaniya and Saurabh Arya have been suspended, and further action will follow once the post-mortem report is received, news agency PTI reported.

Gaayke was reportedly partying with friends in Indrapuri on Thursday night. Around 1:30 am, while one friend was dropping him home, Gaayke allegedly panicked upon seeing police and ran into a lane. The policemen chased and allegedly assaulted him.

He was later taken to a hospital by his friends, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. His friends said his body bore visible bruises and his shirt was torn.
These friends claimed the policemen sought Rs 10,000 when asked to stop the assault.

"Details will be clear after the post mortem report is received. Statements of family members are being recorded. The case is being probed by a City Superintendent of Police level officer," DCP Singh said.

Another official said Udit's parents work in Bhopal, while his brother-in-law is a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Balaghat district.
