A drunk driver ploughed a speeding truck into pedestrians and vehicles in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, leaving at least three people dead and several others critically injured.

The death count, officials fear, may rise as many victims are critical, according to a report by NDTV.

The incident took place in Indore's Shikshak Nagar. CCTV footage showed the truck crushing vehicles before a motorbike got stuck under it, causing it to stop. But the friction set fire to the bike and the truck. Fire tenders later controlled the blaze, according to a report by the Hindustan Times.

Local resident Subhsha Soni told reporters, “My brother-in-law’s legs were severed. He was rushed to Geetanjali Hospital. The truck driver was driving recklessly. The truck’s tyres caught fire, and people began falling as it plowed into the vehicles.”

A police officer said, “The truck coming in at speed hit a bike first and later others. The truck driver has been arrested and he is being interrogated."

DCP Zone-1 Krishna Lalchandani told ANI, "The driver was highly inebriated and lost control of the vehicle, which led to this accident. A bike also came under its grip and was dragged along. So far, two people have died. Nine people are injured, including three who are seriously injured. Prima facie, it seems that the front part of the truck caught fire after the bike came under it. The truck driver is in police custody and has been sent for medical examination..."
