A 26-year-old student from Telangana was found dead with bullet wounds in the United States, his family said on Wednesday.

Praveen Kumar Gampa, the student, was shot dead in Wisconsin. The murder was reported to his family in India after a stranger answered Gampa's call. Afterwards, friends and US authorities confirmed the death.

Praveen, who was pursuing his master’s degree in Wisconsin’s Milwaukee, had travelled to the US in 2023 after completing his bachelor’s in technology from Hyderabad.

Praveen’s cousin informed that the authorities claimed that his body was discovered with bullet wounds. Although it is suspected that he was shot and killed by unidentified attackers, an autopsy will determine the cause of death.

Praveen completed his bachelor’s in technology from Hyderabad before going to the US in 2023 to pursue his masters. The last time he visited his family in India was just a couple of months back in December 2024. He left for the USA soon after in January this year.

The Consulate General of India in Chicago, took to X (formerly Twitter) and expressed condolences over Gampa's death. "We are saddened by the untimely death of Praveen Kumar Gampa, a post-graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Consulate is in contact with Praveen's family and the University, helping them with all possible support. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with his family and friends of the departed," he said.

Two other instances of Telangana students passing away in the United States surfaced recently. According to the PTI, one student from Hyderabad and another from Khammam, Telangana, were shot dead in the United States in January and November of 2024, respectively.
