Why Telangana CM Revanth Reddy faces his first big urban test today

These elections are the first large-scale urban electoral exercise since the Congress government assumed office. The results will be scrutinised not merely as a routine electoral outcome but as a verdict on Revanth Reddy's first 27 months in office.

With vote counting underway for Telangana's 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy faces his first major electoral appraisal in urban territories since leading the Congress party to power in 2023.

Telangana's municipal elections (live coverage) occurred on February 11, featuring 12,930 candidates vying for 2,996 wards. Fourteen wards - 12 municipal and 2 corporation - saw unanimous victories, with one ward's polling postponed.

Over 52,714 voters cast postal ballots ahead of central ones, and counting started slowly due to the use of paper ballots rather than EVMs. The polls recorded a turnout of 73.01 per cent.

Widely characterised as a three-way contest between the ruling Congress, the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), these elections are the first large-scale urban electoral exercise since the Congress government assumed office.

Political analysts regard the outcome as a critical indicator of the Reddy government's standing, particularly after the party's emphatic performance in the gram panchayat polls late last year, where it secured approximately 66 per cent of seats.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Asaduddin Owaisi, has adopted a flexible posture, indicating through campaign messaging that a post-poll alliance remains a possibility.

During the high-voltage campaign period, the Chief Minister and senior Congress leaders sought to anchor public attention on the party's welfare initiatives while launching sustained criticism against the previous BRS administration.

Allegations that former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao — widely known as KCR — and his government had "looted" the state featured prominently in Congress campaign speeches and media briefings. Party functionaries also attempted to exploit visible fissures within the KCR family, a strategy intended to weaken the BRS's traditional influence in urban centres.

The Congress additionally reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the four per cent reservation for OBC Muslims in the state, a pledge aimed at consolidating minority vote banks in several municipal and corporation segments.

Counting of votes commenced at 8 am on Friday across designated centres in all districts, with trends expected to clarify the relative standings of the three principal contenders through the course of the day.

The results will be scrutinised not merely as a routine electoral outcome but as a verdict on Revanth Reddy's first 27 months in office. While the Congress government has aggressively marketed its flagship welfare schemes — including Rythu Bharosa, Indiramma housing and Mahalakshmi — the extent to which these programmes have translated into electoral traction in urban and semi-urban constituencies remains untested until now.

A strong showing would consolidate the Chief Minister's authority within the party and provide momentum ahead of future electoral contests. A poor performance, conversely, could embolden internal factional voices and revive questions about the Congress's organisational muscle in municipal governance.

For the BRS, the numbers will indicate whether the party's core voter base has begun to realign, or whether it retains the capacity to mount a credible challenge. For the BJP, the results will measure the depth of its urban penetration beyond its traditional pockets of influence.
