At least 20 people were killed and several others injured when a Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) bus collided with a gravel-laden truck near Khanapur Gate, under the Chevella police station limits, in Rangareddy district on Monday morning.

A video taken shortly after the collision showed the mangled bus strewn across the road. Injured passengers could be seen crying for help as locals rushed to rescue them.

Several people were trapped inside the bus, and nearby residents risked their lives to pull them out. According to Chevella ACP B Kishan, the bus had started its journey from Tandur and was heading toward Chevella when it met with the accident.

Rajendranagar DCP Yogesh Goutam said the truck was in the right lane when the collision occurred.

“We are verifying whether the crash happened while the truck driver was overtaking another vehicle or if he was driving in the wrong direction,” he said. There were about 40 passengers on board the bus at the time. The truck’s heavy gravel load spilled onto the bus after the impact, which worsened the situation and caused more casualties.

Meanwhile, tension gripped the accident site when local MLA K Yadayah arrived to inspect the scene. Angry locals and relatives of the victims accused the government of neglecting road safety measures and failing to regulate heavy vehicle movement in the area.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and immediately directed officials to reach the spot and oversee rescue operations. He instructed the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police to ensure that the injured were taken to Hyderabad for advanced medical treatment.

PM Modi mourns loss of lives

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the tragedy and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of those who died and Rs 50,000 for those injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

In a message shared by the PMO, he said, “The loss of lives in the Rangareddy district mishap is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the affected families. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
