A drunk man was arrested for allegedly abusing an on-duty woman police officer at a drink-driving checkpoint in Bengaluru’s Indiranagar area on Thursday night, The Indian Express reported citing police.

The accused was identified as Aditya Agarwal, 29, a resident of Akshayanagar on Bannerghatta Road. He was taken into custody following the incident, which took place around midnight when the police stopped his car (KA-01-MZ-1489) outside Vapour Pub for a standard alcohol test.

The Bengaluru city police posted a video of the incident on X.

As per the report, officers observed him attempting to have valet staff drive his vehicle, suspecting he was trying to avoid the checkpoint. When approached by the police, Agarwal ran to the pub.

After pub staff took Agarwal out, Sub-Inspector (SI) Kavitha D requested Agarwal undergo an alcometer test. He allegedly refused and began abusing the officer at the top of his voice, demanding she communicate only in Hindi or English. He allegedly insulted the Kannada language and police personnel in front of hundreds of onlookers.

Kavitha summoned a Hoysala patrol team to handle the situation. A subsequent alcometer test confirmed Agarwal was driving under the influence of alcohol, exceeding legal limits, the police was quoted as saying.

A case under sections 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 351 (criminal intimidation), and 132 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered against the accused. The police said further investigation was underway.
