As a powerful earthquake rattled Assam on Sunday evening, panic swept across towns and cities. But in one neonatal ward in Nagaon, two young nurses stood their ground, shielding newborn babies as the hospital walls shook violently.

The 5.9-magnitude quake struck at 4.41 pm, with its epicentre located in Assam’s Udalguri district at a shallow depth of 5 km, according to the United States Geological Survey. The tremors were felt across Guwahati, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, Nalbari and other parts of the state, before rippling out to neighbouring Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal and even Bhutan.

According to reports, within an hour, two smaller aftershocks were also recorded — a 3.1 quake at 4.58 pm and another of 2.9 at 5.21 pm — further unsettling residents who rushed out of homes and offices.

At Aditya Nursing Home in Nagaon, surveillance footage from the neonatal intensive care unit has since gone viral. The video shows one nurse holding on tightly to two infants, while another shields a baby nearby, even as medical equipment, a mirror and an oxygen cylinder shake visibly.

Their calm demeanour through the tremors has sparked widespread admiration. “Just a few hours ago, Assam trembled under the force of a 5.9 magnitude earthquake… amidst the shaking walls and fearful cries, two young nurses stood tall like true [heroes],” one user posted on X (formerly Twitter), sharing the clip.

The video has been widely shared across social media platforms, with many hailing the staff as “real heroes” for prioritising the safety of newborns over their own. The nurses held their ground until the tremors subsided, ensuring none of the infants were harmed.

While Sunday’s earthquake left residents shaken, the composure and courage displayed inside Nagaon’s Aditya Nursing Home have offered a rare moment of reassurance amid fear. As one viewer noted on X, the two nurses’ instinct to protect the most vulnerable “restored faith in humanity” at a time of widespread panic.
