  • CEO of Noida Authority removed, SIT formed to probe safety failures
  • FIR filed against developers for criminal negligence, lack of safety measures

The drowning of 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta in a waterlogged construction trench in Noida has sparked major administrative upheaval and a probe into systemic safety failures.

Here is a breakdown of the latest developments in the case:

The core incident

On Friday night, around 12.30 am, Yuvraj Mehta was driving home in Noida's Sector 150 when his car veered off the road and plunged into a deep, water-filled excavation pit at a commercial construction site.

According to the police report and his father’s complaint, the combination of heavy fog, a sharp turn on the road and the total absence of warning signs, barricades, lighting, or a secure boundary wall at the site created a fatal hazard.

The failed rescue attempt

The most wrenching aspect of the tragedy is that Mehta survived the crash. He managed to climb onto the roof of his partially submerged car and called for help. According to accounts from officials and family friends, he remained alive, calling out for nearly two hours before succumbing.

Police officers who first reached the scene were unable to attempt a rescue as they did not know how to swim — a skill a senior officer reportedly confirmed that it is not mandatory for the force.

A local passerby, who entered the water around 145 am in a desperate attempt to locate Mehta, has since blamed the administration directly for the death, citing the critically delayed and inadequate official response. The victim's father has formally accused the police and other agencies of a fatal delay.

Latest administrative actions

In response to public outrage and direct intervention from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state government took decisive steps on Monday:

* CEO removed: IAS officer Lokesh M was removed from his dual posts as CEO of the Noida Authority and the Noida Metro Rail Corporation and placed on "compulsory waiting."

* SIT formed: A three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted. Headed by Additional Director General of Police (Meerut Zone) Bhanu Bhaskar, the panel includes the Meerut Divisional Commissioner and the Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department. It has been directed to submit its report within five days.

* Earlier disciplinary & legal action: Prior to this, the Noida Authority suspended a junior engineer responsible for the area. An FIR has also been filed against the project’s real estate developers, Wishtown Planners and Lotus Greens, for criminal negligence due to the lack of mandated safety measures.

Public anger and prior warnings

The incident has ignited significant local anger. Residents staged protests at the site, alleging that the Noida Authority had repeatedly ignored their complaints about the dangerous condition of the spot, where they claim several earlier accidents had occurred. Following the protests, the authority dumped substantial debris near the trench.
