A newly constructed state highway in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district was washed away on Sunday before it could even be inaugurated. The highway, which was built just six months ago to improve connectivity between Baghuli and Jahaj villages with National Highway 52, gave way following heavy rainfall in the region, NDTV reported.
As per the report, the downpour caused the Katli River, a seasonal watercourse flowing through the Udaipurwati area, to swell rapidly. The India Meteorological Department recorded 86 mm of rainfall, which increased the river’s flow and pressure.

The rising water level and strong currents proved too powerful for the new road to withstand. A large portion of the highway collapsed into the river. The collapse was recorded on camera which soon went viral on social media. The netizens shared the video and highlighted serious concerns about the structural integrity and quality of materials used during construction.
Katli River, which runs through the districts of Sikar, Jhunjhunu, and Churu, has been facing increasing encroachment and illegal sand and gravel mining in recent years, according to the NDTV report. Although the administration had initiated efforts to remove these encroachments, the river remains vulnerable during heavy rains.
The dramatic collapse drew large crowds from nearby villages, with many residents capturing videos of the incident. One widely shared clip even showed an electric pole tumbling into the river as the road caved in.
As per NDTV, the Public Works Department (PWD) is likely to send a team for on-site inspection and assess the damage.
