The Nashik Police on Saturday registered two more FIRs against astrologer Ashok Kharat, who is accused of sexually assaulting multiple women.
One complaint was filed by a former employee, who alleged that Kharat assaulted his wife over a period of two years, including when she was seven months pregnant. The accused allegedly used the pretext of performing spiritual rituals to commit the crime, The Times of India reported.
The complainant said he became suspicious of Kharat's activities and installed a CCTV camera in his office. According to him, the footage showed the astrologer forcing women to consume drinks mixed with sedatives and then assaulting them. He also claimed that after confronting Kharat, he was fired from his job and later threatened when the accused learned about the video evidence, TOI reported.
In another case, a woman accused Kharat of raping her multiple times over several years. She alleged that he misled her by promising a better future after her divorce, according to the report. The woman also claimed she was given sedatives and that her pregnancy was terminated without her consent.
Amid the growing number of complaints, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the case is being closely monitored at the highest level. He assured that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty, regardless of their political connections.
“This is a matter of women’s dignity. No one will be spared under any circumstances,” Fadnavis said, adding that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the case.
He also said he has directed the state’s Director General of Police to personally oversee the investigation. Rejecting opposition claims of political motives, Fadnavis stated that the government is focused on delivering justice and supporting victims.
The chief minister added that more women are now coming forward with complaints. He said authorities are encouraging victims and their families to speak up despite social pressure and fear.
Meanwhile, Rupali Chakankar, chairperson of the Maharashtra Women’s Commission, has resigned after acknowledging her association with the accused. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
