After a quiet spell following the early arrival of the monsoon on May 26, Mumbai is now seeing signs of its return. According to the scientists at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon is expected to revive on June 13, bringing more rain to the city and other parts of Maharashtra, Hindustan Times reported.

On Wednesday, Mumbai is likely to experience partly cloudy skies, along with light rain or thundershowers in some areas, including the suburbs. While the weather remains hot and humid, scattered showers are expected in patches across the city as the monsoon gradually strengthens, according to a report by Mid-day.

The IMD has not issued any weather warning for Mumbai today, but light rainfall is predicted in various parts of the city.

“Monsoon is not always active; it has dormant periods which the Indian peninsular region is currently experiencing. While there were intermittent spells of showers, the monsoon was majorly inactive, which is now expected to revive on June 13 across the peninsular region,” HT quoted Sushma Nair, scientist at IMD, as saying.

An orange alert has been issued by the weather department for Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, and the Ghats of Kolhapur due to expected heavy rains, while a yellow alert is in place for Thane, Raigad, and Pune on June 13.

Rainfall recorded since June 1 shows that Santacruz has received 87.5 mm, while Colaba has received 82.4 mm. According to the IMD, a trough (an extended area of low pressure) stretching from North Tamil Nadu to the South Maharashtra coast across interior Karnataka is bringing in moisture that will lead to more rain in the coming days.

Notably, the IMD has forecasted that India will receive 106 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA) for the 2025 monsoon season (June to September). This means the country is likely to get above-normal rainfall.

"The southwest monsoon seasonal (June to September, 2025) rainfall is most likely to be above normal over Central India and South Peninsular India (>106% of LPA), normal over Northwest India (92-108% of LPA) and below normal over Northeast India (<94% of LPA)," the IMD said in a press release.
