The downpour led to severe waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic snarls and delays in suburban train and metro services.

Mumbai faced severe disruption on Monday as relentless rainfall triggered wall collapses, tree falls and widespread waterlogging, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for the city on Tuesday. The weather agency warned of heavy showers until 1 pm, following a day of chaos that left three people injured in rain-related incidents.

Between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Monday, Colaba in south Mumbai recorded 42.2 mm of rainfall, while Santacruz in the suburbs logged 69.6 mm. The western suburb of Nariyalwadi was worst hit, receiving 93 mm in just 10 hours up to 6 pm, followed by Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) at 92 mm and Khar East at 86 mm, as per IMD data cited by News18.

The downpour led to severe waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic snarls and delays in suburban train and metro services. Flight operations were also impacted, with IndiGo Airlines advising passengers of slow road conditions and visibility issues near the airport.

“Heavy rainfall continues across Mumbai and road conditions remain slow in several parts of the city. Waterlogging and low visibility are being reported on some routes to the airport,” the airline posted on X.

The IMD has forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra and Gujarat until June 22. Saurashtra and Kutch could see extremely heavy rainfall on Tuesday, News18 reported.

The monsoon is also expected to advance further into Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and the remaining parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim in the coming hours.
