Amid growing concerns over safety and overcrowding on Mumbai’s packed trains, the Maharashtra government has announced a new measure to ease peak-hour pressure; its employees will now have the option to start work half an hour later, reported News18.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik told the State Assembly that the move aims to stagger office rush and reduce the burden on the city’s overworked railway system.
The decision comes after BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar flagged the alarming rise in rail accidents linked to overcrowding. Sarnaik added that a task force will also look into similar timing adjustments for private sector employees.
However, Sarnaik has made it clear that starting work half-hour will lead to extending work hours in the evening, so that the total working time remains unchanged.
The report further stated that the minister is making efforts to encourage people to use alternative modes of transport, such as Metro trains and other public transport options.
He said that the government is committed to ensuring safe travel for all commuters. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is also expected to hold a meeting soon to address the rising number of cases where passengers risk their lives by boarding overcrowded trains with doors left open.
Sarnaik emphassied that these changes are not just temporary solutions but part of a broader strategy to address Mumbai's travel challenges sustainably. Although adjusting office hours might appear to be a minor change, it could provide much-needed relief for hundreds of thousands of commuters during their daily journeys.
