A truck loaded with beer bottles has remained trapped in a deep ditch on Gurugram’s Southern Peripheral Road since late Wednesday night, after a section of the road suddenly caved in during heavy rains, The Times of India reported.

The incident, which has gone viral on social media, happened after an intense spell of rain caused a portion of the road to collapse, severely impacting traffic.

According to the truck driver, he was en route to a warehouse when the mishap occurred.

"Beer bottles are loaded in the truck. I was going to the godown. The road was completely dry last night. There was no waterlogging here. Another of our trucks and a dumper truck also crossed here. After that, the road caved in, and my truck fell in. No one was injured," the truck driver was quoted by TOI as saying.

As per India Today, the incident took place between 10 and 11 pm on Wednesday. Officials explained that a pipeline had been installed under that part of the road to address frequent waterlogging on the opposite side. Just about 15 days ago, a sewer line was laid in the same spot, likely weakening the structure beneath. The combination of heavy rainfall and underground work is suspected to have led to the sudden collapse.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Gurugram recorded 133 mm of rainfall in 12 hours, with over 103 mm of it falling in just 90 minutes. Nearby Wazirabad tehsil recorded 122 mm in the same duration.

The downpour caused traffic chaos across Gurugram. Key roads and intersections, including Sohna Road, MG Road, NH-8, Shadipur, Madhuban Chowk, and Old Rohtak Road, were inundated. Traffic came to a grinding halt, with vehicles submerged in some underpasses. The Narsinghpur stretch of the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway was among the worst affected.
