In a landmark move poised to transform India’s entertainment landscape, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced plans for the country’s first Disneyland-style theme park in Manesar, just outside Delhi.
As per HT, the 500-acre project, strategically positioned along the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway and Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor, aims to position the National Capital Region (NCR) alongside global destinations like Paris, Tokyo and California.
Described by Saini as a “game-changer” for Haryana’s economy and culture, the proposed park is expected to generate thousands of jobs, boost infrastructure and catalyse growth in hospitality and real estate. “This entertainment hub will bring economic, cultural and social benefits not only to Haryana but to the entire country,” the CM said after discussions with Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, HT reported.
The location, close to corporate hubs in Gurugram and the upcoming 1,000-acre Global City project, was chosen for its connectivity and market potential. Officials confirmed groundwork is underway, though Disney has yet to issue an official statement.
The announcement has reignited memories of a failed 1989 bid by then-CM Om Prakash Chautala to build a similar park over 28,000 acres, a plan scrapped after farmer protests. INLD leader Abhay Chautala accused the BJP of hypocrisy, citing its past opposition: “Had the 1989 project materialised, Haryana would have been a tax-free state today,” The Print reported.
BJP leaders, however, defended the scaled-down 500-acre plan, stressing it respects farmers’ rights. “Our opposition in 1989 was against the forcible acquisition of thousands of acres of farmers’ land. This project is limited to 500 acres and will be executed in a manner that respects farmers’ interests while promoting development,” said party spokesperson Arun Yadav, HT quoted.
The state is also reportedly revamping its cultural offerings, expanding the Surajkund Crafts Mela to include a Diwali Fair and Book Fair, while pushing for central funds to scale up the International Gita Mahotsav in Kurukshetra. Experts say this blend of heritage and modern attractions could redefine Haryana’s global appeal.
