A 38-year-old woman, Deepti Chaurasia, the daughter-in-law of the owner of Kamla Pasand Pan Masala, was found dead at her residence in Vasant Vihar, southwest Delhi, in what police say appears to be a case of suicide.
The discovery has triggered an inquiry under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), even as her family alleges long-standing harassment by her husband and in-laws.
Police said the Deepti Chaurasia was found unresponsive in the dressing area attached to the couple’s bedroom on Tuesday morning. Her husband had reportedly left for the gym after their two children went to school and returned later to discover her condition. She was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared her “brought dead”.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Amit Goel, an autopsy has been completed and the body returned to the family. Officers are awaiting the detailed report to determine whether there were any injuries or signs of external pressure.
During a search of her room, investigators recovered a diary containing an entry that referred to “relationship issues”. A senior police officer was cited by News18 saying that no names were mentioned and the woman had not held anyone responsible in the note. Other pages are being examined to build a clearer picture of her mental state in the days leading up to the incident.
Deepti Chaurasia’s brother has levelled serious allegations against her marital family, claiming she had been “tortured” for a long time. He alleged that her husband had “illegally married someone else” and said the family had brought her back to Kolkata for several months in an attempt to help her recover emotionally. He also claimed that her in-laws later visited them, “promised to take care of her” and took her back to Delhi — but “the torture continued”.
The businessman’s lawyer, Rajender Singh, rejected the allegations as “baseless”, saying that both families were grieving and appealing for the last rites to proceed peacefully. “There was no note or complaint against anyone,” he said, as per News18.
Police have initiated proceedings under Section 194 of the BNSS, which governs inquiries into unnatural or suspicious deaths. This process includes examining personal writings, speaking to relatives from both sides and reviewing material recovered from the home.
Officers will continue to record statements and assess the evidence before determining whether any criminal case is warranted. No FIR has been registered so far and the inquiry remains open. Authorities are also waiting for the final autopsy findings, which could help establish whether any factors beyond self-harm were involved.
