'If Bengaluru rains continue at this pace ...': Key emergency helplines you need to know

Amid heavy rains and flooding in Bengaluru, here's a guide to essential helplines and resources

Bengaluru has been witnessing heavy downpours for the past three days. Thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds has hit several regions, causing severe waterlogging, property damage, and traffic jams. Areas like Silk Board Junction, Hosur Road, and BTM Layout were among the worst affected, with roads submerged and vehicles stranded.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued an orange alert for the capital city of Karnataka following days of heavy rainfall. The alert warns of continued heavy to very heavy rain over the next two days. According to a report by Deccan Herald, if the rains continue at this pace, May 2025 could become the wettest May in Bengaluru’s recorded history, possibly beating the previous record of 30.5 cm set in May 2023.

BBMP (24/7, Toll-free): 1533
For reporting flooding, fallen trees, stranded persons, snake sightings, streetlight outages, basement flooding, and garbage issues.

To report power cuts or electricity-related issues.

For buses stuck in waterlogged roads or accidents involving BMTC vehicles.

For water supply, sewage, and sanitation-related complaints.

Elders Helpline (24/7): 1090
Managed by Nightingales Medical Trust and Bengaluru Police. “During rains, we get several calls from elderly citizens asking about waterlogging and traffic in their area,” DH quoted S Premkumar Raja of the Trust as saying.

Animal Rescue: 1962
Operated by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department. On Tuesday, 66 calls were received for rescuing dogs, cats, and buffaloes.
