A 26-year-old man from Prayagraj has alleged that his newlywed bride threatened to kill him on their wedding night, insisted she was in love with another man and ultimately escaped her marital home to reunite with her lover. The disturbing series of events, which unfolded just days after the couple's wedding, have come to light following a complaint to police. The matter has since been resolved without a formal FIR, as both families opted for a mutual settlement.
The man, identified as Captain Nishad from ADA Colony in Prayagraj, was married to Sitara, daughter of Lakshmi Narayan Nishad from Karachhana Deeha village, on April 29. She arrived at his family home on April 30 and a reception was held on May 2. But what was meant to mark the start of a new life quickly turned into a nightmare.
According to a News18 report, Nishad claimed that when he entered the room on their wedding night, Sitara was sitting silently under a veil and holding a knife. “She told me bluntly - ‘Don’t touch me. I’m Aman’s property. If you try, I’ll cut you into 35 pieces.’ I was frozen. That entire night, I sat on the sofa while she stayed on the bed with the knife. I didn’t dare sleep,” Nishad was cited by News18.
Nishad said that this unsettling pattern continued for three nights. Sitara, he said, would only sleep after midnight and he stayed awake in fear of being attacked in his sleep. The constant stress and anxiety reportedly left him traumatised.
On May 3, unable to cope with the mental strain, Nishad informed his mother. When Sitara was confronted by the family, she allegedly admitted she was in love with Aman, had been forced into the marriage and wanted to be with her lover. She said Aman alone had the right to spend the wedding night with her, according to News18.
The family called Sitara’s parents and organised a formal meeting with local elders on May 25. During the discussions, she was reportedly urged to forget Aman and accept her marriage. A written compromise was prepared, where she agreed to stay with her husband, as reported by News18.
However, Nishad’s father, Ram Asare, said that even after the agreement, Sitara continued to reject the marriage in private and repeatedly demanded to be sent to Aman. She allegedly showed chat messages between herself and Aman to family members and in one instance called him in front of them, asking him to take her away. Aman reportedly responded by threatening to kill Nishad if necessary.
Nishad’s sister, Poonam, recalled to News18 that the family only realised something was wrong when her brother appeared unusually distressed. Initially assuming he was adjusting to married life, they were alarmed when Sitara made her intentions clear and even displayed her ongoing communication with Aman.
On the night of May 30, Sitara allegedly escaped from the house. With the main gate locked, she is believed to have climbed over the rear boundary wall. CCTV footage later captured her limping away from the house around midnight. Nishad’s father said they had no idea she was planning to flee and added that she had no key to the gate.
Nishad’s mother, Shanti Devi, was quoted by News18 as saying that the family lived in constant fear during those days. She said Sitara had threatened to harm either herself or her son and they worried about being blamed for any drastic incident. She said they were relieved after her departure, as it ensured the safety of both Sitara and her son.
Sitara’s father, Lakshmi Narayan, expressed his anguish, saying that he had tried hard to find a suitable match for his daughter, but she refused to accept the marriage and had brought shame and distress to the family.
Inspector Kishore Gautam of Naini Bridge Police Station confirmed to News18 that the case was handled as a domestic issue. Since the groom’s family did not want an FIR and both sides agreed to resolve the matter through discussion, police respected their decision. A written agreement was submitted by both families.
Now trying to move on, Captain Nishad said that he was emotionally scarred by the incident and could not imagine living with Sitara again. He said he feared for his life every night during those days and would only consider marrying again if he was sure the person understood the true meaning of marriage.
