Hyderabad woke up to steady showers on Wednesday as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for the city and several districts across Telangana.
The cloudy and rainy spell, brought on by a low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal near the Odisha coast, is expected to last until August 29, Telangana Today reported.
After a brief halt, the rains have returned at a time when the city is gearing up for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Outdoor events, idol installations, and community gatherings may face disruptions if the rain continues through the week.
Hyderabad recorded light to moderate rainfall on Tuesday, with Serilingampally receiving the highest amount at 9.3 mm, according to data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS).
Other parts of the city, including Gachibowli (7.3 mm), MMTS Lingampally (7 mm), Rajendranagar, Shaikpet, Musheerabad, Patancheru, and Kukatpally, recorded between 5-7 mm.
The rainfall was heavier in districts outside the city. Momimpet in Vikarabad district topped the charts with 35.5 mm, followed by Malchelma in Sangareddy and Marpalle in Vikarabad at 33 mm each. Pallegudem in Khammam recorded 32.3 mm, while Venkatapuram in Mulugu saw 32 mm.
Several parts of Khammam, Warangal, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahabubabad, and Mulugu also recorded between 20-30 mm of rain.
According to IMD-Hyderabad chief K Nagaratna, heavy rainfall is more likely in eastern districts such as Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mulugu, Warangal, Mahabubabad, and Jayashankar Bhupalpally.
Meanwhile, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Mancherial, Medchal, Nirmal, and Jagtial may see thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
Notably, Telangana’s rainfall status has swung within a week, from a 14% surplus on August 18 to a 9% deficit by August 26.
Districts like Nirmal (-44%), Peddapally (-21%), Bhupalpally (-13%), Nalgonda (-13%), and Nizamabad (-12%) have been the worst affected, Deccan Chronicle reported.
