A murder convict, out on parole for treatment, was shot dead by gunmen inside a private hospital in Bihar's Patna on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Chandan Mishra, a resident of Buxar district, who went to the Paras hospital for treatment, according to PTI.

"The man, convicted in a murder case, was a prisoner at Beur Jail and had gone to the hospital for treatment on parole. The police received information that a person was shot at by gunmen inside a private hospital in Patna at 7.30 am on Thursday. The incident took place when the deceased had come for treatment at the hospital. He was on parole," Patna (central) SP Diksha told PTI.

A case has been registered and the matter is being investigated, said the SP, adding that a manhunt has been launched to nab the accused. Prima facie, it appears that old rivalry might be the reason behind the murder, the SP added.

Independent MP from Purnea, Pappu Yadav stopped from visiting the incident spot by the police. He said, "I will request the Governor to impose President's rule in Bihar... Nurses, doctors, no one is safe in Bihar... These leaders can do politics only on the basis of money... Criminals are selected on the basis of their caste, fake encounters are done. They protect the shooters..."

"There is no such thing as administration in Bihar. They give shelter to mafias... Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is not running the government. The BJP is running the government," he added.

Tejashwi Yadav also reacted on the hospital shooting. Questioning the state government, he asked "Is anyone safe anywhere in Bihar?"

In a post on X, Tejashwi Yadav said, "Government criminals stormed into the ICU and shot a patient admitted to the hospital. Is anyone safe anywhere in Bihar? Has this happened before 2005?"
