A foetus and several infant body parts were discovered abandoned in glass and plastic containers at a garbage site in Daund, Pune, on Tuesday.

According to the police officials, ten containers filled with biomedical waste were found discarded along the roadside at Borawake Chowk, Daund, in the morning. “We found one foetus and some vestigial organs. All these were disposed of in 10 different glass containers in a wrongful manner at a garbage site,” said Inspector Gopal Pawar of Daund police station, as per news agency PTI.

The body parts, packed into containers, seemed to belong to five or six infants and were discarded in an open area near a petrol pump. An offence has been registered against unidentified persons under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 89 (causing a miscarriage without the woman's consent), 90 (death caused by an act done with intent to cause miscarriage), 271 (negligently spreading a disease dangerous to life) and 272 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), the police official informed.

Pune District Superintendent of Police (DSP) Pankaj Deshmukh revealed that a nursing home was situated near the location where the remains were found. Initial investigations indicated that the remains might be linked to the facility's biomedical waste disposal process, according to an ABPLive report. Authorities are investigating whether the disposal was carried out in accordance with proper protocols.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Bapurao Tadas said, “This morning, plastic jars were found in an open area near a petrol pump in Borawake Nagar, Daund. Inside these jars, the body of an infant was discovered, along with body parts in seven to eight other jars.”
