Delhi Police have arrested a 54-year-old woman for allegedly killing her two daughters at their home in Malviya Nagar. The arrest comes nearly two weeks after the bodies of the sisters were discovered, The Times of India reported.
The accused, identified as Sunita Arora, had earlier attempted suicide and was admitted to a hospital. After doctors completed medical and psychiatric examinations, she was discharged and later taken into custody. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Anant Mittal, the arrest was made after reviewing evidence collected during the investigation, as per the report.
Police, as quoted by TOI, said the mother was allegedly distressed due to a strained relationship with her husband and financial dependence, which may have contributed to the crime.
The case came to light on March 5 around 6 pm when a relative informed the police that no one in the family was responding to calls or opening the door. When officers reached the house, they found the main door locked from inside. They had to break a window to enter the home.
The bodies of the two sisters were found in separate rooms inside the house. The elder daughter, aged 33, was found with a pillow covering her face. Police believe she may have been suffocated. The younger daughter, aged 28, had marks on her neck, suggesting she was strangled, TOI reported.
Police said the elder daughter, who was specially abled, was likely attacked first. Signs of a struggle were found in the room. The younger daughter and their mother were discovered unconscious in another room. All three were taken to a hospital, where the daughters were declared dead.
Cops suspect that a bandage may have been used in the crime, according to the TOI report. They are also examining whether naphthalene balls were crushed and used to sedate one of the victims. It is believed that the mother may have consumed the substance as well.
As per the report, the family had been facing domestic problems and was not very social. Police are also looking into possible mental health issues within the household. The investigation is ongoing.
