Tamil Nadu’s capital Chennai and its neighbouring districts reeled under rain for the third straight day on Wednesday.
The city and its neighbouring districts are expected to see milder showers on Thursday, with forecasters indicating that the worst of the heavy rainfall (from the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah) is over.
Clear skies likely from FridayClearer skies and sunny intervals are likely from Friday onwards as the weather system weakens and moves inland.
Mostly cloudy to partly sunny conditions are expected for Saturday and Sunday, with only a small chance of light rain or drizzle as the weather system fully dissipates.
Additionally, intense rainfall lashed Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpet on Wednesday, in addition to Chennai, as cloud convergence persisted over the region.
This came even as the depression over the Bay of Bengal weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area and made landfall near Puducherry on Wednesday morning. While the heaviest rain was concentrated over Tiruvallur and North Chennai, Central and South Chennai experienced moderate showers with intermittent breaks.
By 5:30 pm on Wednesday, Ennore had recorded 14.6 cm of rainfall, while Puzhal received 5.6 cm.
R Boopalan, a resident of Tiruvottiyur, was quoted by Times of India as saying that non-stop rain lashed Ennore and Tiruvottiyur since Tuesday night, continuing till Wednesday and flooding several areas.
Weather blogger Pradeep John was quoted by the newspaper as saying that the downpours accompanied by thunderstorms were triggered by the interaction between upper-level and lower-level winds.
“Since the depression lay south of Chennai, the convergence of clouds happened over Kancheepuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpet districts, though Tiruvallur witnessed heavy rainfall since the clouds were stuck over the region,” he added.
