Bengaluru residents are facing severe disruption as heavy rains and gusty winds pounded the city, leading to widespread waterlogging, uprooted trees and significant traffic snarls. The adverse weather conditions have prompted official alerts, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for the city, effective for the next three days.
According to reports, multiple localities, particularly those in low-lying areas, are at high risk of flooding. The situation has been exacerbated by the rainfall recorded earlier this week; the IT hub received 16.6mm of rain in the first six days of the month and 7mm in the past 24 hours as of Wednesday.
The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre forecasted light to moderate rain and thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds of 30-40 kmph for Bengaluru and surrounding districts.
The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) reported that the severe weather has already caused substantial damage, with seven trees uprooted and 25 branches snapped due to the strong winds and showers.
Throughout the morning, the Bengaluru Traffic Police issued multiple warnings to commuters as fallen trees and waterlogged roads blocked several key routes. Commuters are being strongly advised to check live traffic updates before embarking on their journeys.
Adding to the on-ground reports, a solo weather forecast on X shared a rainfall map for the city, indicating that scattered light to moderate rainfall was recorded, specifically in the extreme north, southwest, southeast and extreme south of Bengaluru.
The wet spell is expected to persist. The weather forecast for Bengaluru, as reported by TimesNow, predicts generally cloudy skies with spells of rain or thundershowers for today, October 9, with temperatures ranging from 21 degrees Celsius to 27 degrees Celsius.
Similar conditions, with mostly cloudy skies and a chance of rain, are forecast for the subsequent days, continuing through until Saturday, October 12. A gradual reduction in rainfall activity is anticipated by Sunday, October 13, leading to a mostly cloudy but drier day on Monday, October 14.
