The Karnataka government has set in motion an ambitious plan to extend the Bengaluru Metro’s reach to Tumakuru, a significant infrastructure push aimed at decongesting the capital and improving regional connectivity.
The project moved forward this week as the state accepted a crucial feasibility study and instructed the preparation of a detailed blueprint.
According to a report in The Indian Express, Home Minister G Parameshwara announced on Monday that the government has accepted the feasibility study report for the proposed 59.6-kilometre line. “The project would become a reality soon,” Parameshwara stated during a news conference in Tumakuru.
The initiative, first announced in the 2024-25 state budget, envisages extending the metro rail from Madavara, which is the current northern terminus of the Green Line in Bengaluru, to the neighbouring city of Tumakuru. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) was tasked with overseeing the initial study.
The BMRCL reportedly awarded the feasibility study to a Hyderabad-based company at a cost of Rs 3 crore. With that report now accepted, the government has directed the BMRCL to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. An official order to this effect was issued on September 25, with the DPR also budgeted at Rs 3 crore.
The scale of the undertaking is substantial, with initial phase estimates pegging the cost at a staggering Rs 20,649 crore. Minister Parameshwara noted that several private companies have already expressed interest in taking up the metro work, signalling potential for the PPP model to accelerate development.
This extension promises to seamlessly integrate Tumakuru with Bengaluru's existing metro network. The proposed line will branch out from the Green Line, a 33.46-kilometre corridor that currently connects suburbs in Bengaluru’s north-western part to its southern areas.
It is one of three operational lines in the city, alongside the 43.5-kilometre Purple Line (Whitefield to Challaghatta) and the 18.8-kilometre Yellow Line (Bommasandra to Electronic City).
The move to prepare the DPR, as reported by The Indian Express, marks a critical transition from concept to planning, bringing the vision of a metro-linked Tumakuru a significant step closer.
If realised, the project would be one of the largest metro extensions in the region, fundamentally altering the commute for thousands and potentially reshaping the economic corridor between the two cities.
