A 38-year-old man died on Friday morning after he allegedly jumped onto the tracks at Kengeri metro station in southwestern Bengaluru, causing significant disruption to the city’s Purple Line during the morning commute.

The deceased has been identified as Shantagoud Police Patil, a native of Devara Hipparagi in the Vijayapura district. According to officials from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the incident occurred around 8.15 am as a train was approaching the station.

Alert security personnel immediately cut power to the third rail upon seeing the man jump. However, he was found trapped between the track and the train. A statement from Namma Metro confirmed that following the incident, services on the Purple Line were suspended beyond Mysuru Road station towards Challaghatta from approximately 8.30 am.

The suspension triggered immediate chaos for morning commuters. Hundreds of passengers were left stranded at station entrances for over an hour. With services halted, many were forced to seek alternative transport, leading to a sudden surge in demand for BMTC buses and autorickshaws along Mysuru Road.

Social media platforms saw a barrage of posts from frustrated commuters detailing the long waits and subsequent scramble, which in turn caused significant traffic congestion on the key arterial road.

According to the BMRCL, the Kengeri police along with a special team rushed to the scene. The body was removed from the tracks and shifted to Rajarajeshwari Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.

Authorities stated that the primary investigation is ongoing and they are yet to ascertain details about Patil’s profession or the motive behind his actions. Police are verifying CCTV footage from the station. A case of unnatural death will be registered, they confirmed.

Normal metro services resumed by 9.40 am, the BMRCL said, after police personnel, paramedics and metro security teams cleared the scene. The corporation’s official statement noted that trains were running only up to Mysuru Road station during the suspension period.
