A Kolkata Police assistant sub-inspector has been arrested for masterminding a daring daylight robbery of Rs 2.66 crore from two employees of a private foreign exchange company, police officials confirmed on Wednesday. The incident unfolded on May 5 in the bustling Entally area, reported PTI.
The two employees were transporting the hefty sum in a taxi, travelling from S N Banerjee Road to a state-run bank in Park Circus, when the crime occurred at around 11.45 am.
According to the PTI report, two unidentified men forced the taxi driver to stop near Kamardanga, swiftly entered the vehicle and made off with the cash. The victims promptly lodged a complaint, triggering an investigation by the Kolkata Police detective department.
What sets this case apart is the alleged involvement of a serving police officer. Investigators revealed that the assistant sub-inspector, identified as Mintu Sarkar and attached to the anti-terror squad of the Special Task Force, meticulously planned the heist, the Telegraph India reported. Sarkar’s arrest brings the total number of people apprehended in connection with the robbery to seven.
A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, was quoted by PTI as saying, “The ASI had planned the entire robbery. We have arrested him,” but declined to provide further details as the probe continues.
The authorities are now working to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy and are pursuing additional leads to bring any other accomplices to justice.
