A sudden evening snowfall triggered major traffic disruptions near the Atal Tunnel in Kullu district, stranding more than 1,000 vehicles and prompting swift rescue efforts by police.
The heavy snowfall began in the higher reaches around Manali, a popular tourist town, on Sunday afternoon before intensifying in the evening. Roads leading to the Atal Tunnel and nearby tourist routes turned extremely slippery, with several vehicles losing traction and halting all movement in the area.

Manali police teams rushed to the southern portal of the tunnel upon reports of stranded vehicles, many belonging to tourists heading to sightseeing spots in Lahaul Valley, according to News18. The sudden weather shift caught travellers off guard, significantly raising accident risks on the snow-covered paths.
Manali DSP KD Sharma was cited by News18 as stating that more than 1,000 vehicles were stuck near the southern end due to rapidly accumulating snow. He added that the entire Manali police team had been at the site for several hours, coordinating rescues and traffic management to guide all motorists safely back towards Manali.
Police personnel deployed at multiple points directed vehicles towards Manali to avert further congestion and mishaps. Operations have continued non-stop, with DSP Sharma appealing to the public to stay calm as every effort is underway to escort vehicles and tourists to safety.
Authorities have roped in the Border Roads Organisation and other agencies, urging immediate deployment of teams and machinery, as per the report. Heavy equipment, soil, and chemical solutions like urea could be used to clear the snow and restore safe conditions.
Police reportedly urged tourists and drivers to exercise patience and cooperate, emphasising safety measures. Officials said the police are always ready to serve and protect the public, asking motorists to follow on-ground instructions.
In a related incident, Banjar police rescued around 40 tourists stranded at Jalori Pass in Kullu’s higher reaches amid the same snowfall. Authorities warned that slippery roads at high-altitude spots pose skidding risks and adv ised travellers to check weather and road updates before venturing out.
