The Ghaziabad police have suspended one sub-inspector and three constables from a Sahibabad police post after they allegedly attended the birthday celebrations of a known criminal at a bar in Sahibabad on September 27, officials said on Monday.

An initial inquiry revealed that the policemen were allegedly drinking and dancing with female dancers at the bar during the party. Video clips from the event went viral on social media, showing the officers holding beer bottles, dancing, and enjoying the celebrations. Scenes of music, liquor, and revelry were clearly visible in the footage, Hindustan Times reported.

“During the preliminary inquiry, CCTV footage from the bar was reviewed. It confirmed that four police personnel had attended the birthday party of a history-sheeted suspect. Three constables were clearly seen in the footage, while the sub-inspector was not, though we are checking additional CCTVs. Prima facie, they had attended the event, and all four have been suspended pending a detailed investigation,” HT quoted Nimish Patil, DCP of the Trans-Hindon zone, as saying.

Officials said the criminal, Irshad Malik, who has a history of crimes, was also seen celebrating with the policemen in the footage. The bar was temporarily closed on Monday, and authorities reopened it to access the CCTV recordings. “A preliminary case of dereliction of duty is evident. The role of the four policemen in being close to a history-sheeted criminal will also be examined,” said Shweta Yadav, ACP of Sahibabad.

Malik, according to the police, has a history of criminal activity and had invited the officers to his birthday. He was previously barred from entering Ghaziabad for six months, a restriction that ended about a year ago. The ACP added that Malik also has cases related to cow slaughter and violations under the Arms Act registered against him.
