Police on Sunday arrested three men in connection with the alleged rape of an MBBS student from a private medical college in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district. The identities of the three arrested accused were yet to be disclosed by the police.
"We have arrested three persons in connection with the case. They are being questioned. This is a very sensitive case and we will give out further details later," a police officer told PTI.
Sources in the police said the mobile phones of the three accused were also seized.
According to media reports, the student, a second-year MBBS student from Balasore in Odisha, was dragged outside her college campus and raped on Friday night. The survivor had gone out of the campus with a male friend when she was allegedly dragged into a jungle located at the backside of the college campus and sexually assaulted. On being alerted, the police rushed to the spot.
Police rushed to the spot after receiving the information about the incident and started an investigation. The survivor was admitted to a hospital for medical examination.
Police have also started questioning staff at the medical college, as well as other individuals, including the friend who was with the woman.
Odisha CM condemns incident
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi condemned the alleged gang rape of an Odia medical student in West Bengal. In a social media ‘X’ post, CM Majhi said, the unfortunate incident of gang rape involving an Odia student in Durgapur, West Bengal, is highly condemnable and painful.
“I am deeply shocked upon hearing this news. In this sensitive matter, I strongly urge the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, to take exemplary action against the accused as per the law," he said.
Odisha CM said, “I pray for the speedy recovery of the victim. I have also instructed senior officials to contact the West Bengal government and take necessary steps. All possible assistance will be provided to the victim’s family on behalf of the Odisha government."
