The share of deposits held by financial corporations rose to 7 percent of total deposits in June 2025, up from 6 percent a year earlier, according to the latest data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
In contrast, the share of household deposits edged lower to 59.9 percent, compared with 60.8 percent in June 2024. Deposits owned by senior citizens accounted for 20.4 percent of the total as of end-June 2025, the data showed.
Overall deposits with scheduled commercial banks (SCBs) grew 11.3 percent year-on-year in June 2025, marginally slower than the 11.7 percent growth recorded a year ago (net of merger).
Growth across bank categories remained uneven. Public sector banks saw deposits rise 10.2 percent, while private sector banks posted a stronger 12.4 percent increase. Their shares in overall deposits stood at 57.3 percent and 36 percent, respectively.
The data also highlighted a clear shift in preference towards term deposits. Term deposits grew 13.5 percent year-on-year, far outpacing the 5.4 percent growth in savings deposits. As a result, the share of term deposits in the overall mix climbed to 62.2 percent in June 2025, up from 61 percent a year earlier.
